We’ve Got Chickens

Meet Frida and The Cheese.

Frida and The Cheese

Along with two other families on our block, we have started a small urban chicken flock.  We are all interested in the fresh, super-local cage free eggs, of course; but I think the real desire to have chickens comes from a careless mix of back-to-the-land bravado, nurturing instincts, and the glory of a backyard matriarchal society.  (No roosters allowed.)  And they are darned cute.  In fact, we have six tiny little chicks, not pictured here because your RDA of vitamin cute has already been exceeded.

  1. They look quite nice. Where’d you get these gals? I’ve been looking for a couple more to keep our hen company and haven’t been able to find any older ones.

What happens to the male chicks?

  3. We got them from Livingstone Nursery on N. Williams. I think they’ve got a few left – and next year they plan to have them later into the summer. Apparently, you can even put in a special request for whatever variety of chick you heart desires.

  4. The male chicks? Good question. I like to imagine they are at chicken camp somewhere. Lil’ Rooster Scouts?

  5. Sad update folks. The Cheese (pictured in the background) has turned out to be a boy and was duly sent to chicken camp outside of the city limits. Thank you for your cards and well wishes.
